What JLPT N5 Covers

N5 is the entry point of the JLPT, designed for learners who are just starting out. It measures the ability to understand basic Japanese used in everyday situations.

• Read and understand simple sentences and passages written in hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji
• Follow slow, clearly-spoken conversations about familiar daily topics
• Roughly 100 kanji and 800 vocabulary words are commonly covered at this level
• The foundation every learner needs before moving on to N4
